Guest Room Makeover

When I bought this house almost 2 years ago (wow…time is flying!) I had dreams of it being the ultimate place to entertain. Think the Playboy Mansion, but no polyamorous relationships, sketchy grottoes, or reality tv crews. More like, super tame game nights with my girls, romcom movies in my home theater, and literally no celebrities. So basically…not the Playboy Mansion. lol. But you get my drift.

And since that’s my goal, it would make sense that I would plan a guest room makeover before I’ve even bought a single new pillow for my own bedroom. Priorities = together.

BEFORE

So, let’s get into it!

I chose to turn one of my lower level bedrooms into my guest room so that guests will essentially have their own suite. There is a bathroom on that level, library nook, easy access to the kitchen and will eventually include my home gym and movie room. They’ll have everything they need right at their fingertips! (And none of their moving about will wake me because there’s a floor between us. #winwin)

That said, it was a pretty basic bedroom with builder grade carpet and plain beige walls.

*This light fixture is not original to the house. I actually purchased it an estate sale a while back. I moved it into the walk-in closet in the guest room for the final reveal.

Over the summer, I ripped up the carpet and laid luxury vinyl planks from Home Depot. It was a pretty straight forward project that I was able to finish up in one weekend. If you want more details and a video recap of that project, check out the installation process on TikTok.

After

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted on a regular basis (I’m officially back by the way), but if you’ve forgotten or you’re new here… “Hi, my name is Blake and I love dark moody decor.” So, my guest room was no exception. And since the room is on the smaller side, I wanted all the walls to kind of disappear and to feel enveloped in all the richness of the colors and patterns.

For my guest room makeover, I partnered with AllModern to bring my vision to life and create the perfect home away from home.

The first item I selected for the room was the bed. I tend to gravitate towards jewel tone colors and this rich green velvet bed was the perfect anchor for the room. Texture is my favorite design accessory and that’s where the rug comes into play. The black and white geometric print really grounds the room and acts a neutral without being boring. I also leaned into the green theme by painting the walls a deep olive green shade from Behr called “Night Mission” and styling the bed with a deep green duvet.

To give the room some visual lightness, I placed a grey swivel chair in the corner along with a gorgeous sculptural floor lamp. I rounded out this cozy corner with small art prints and grabbed some simple white frames from Michael’s.

If you’ve been around since the #LoftSB days then you recognize this artwork that used to be in my kitchen. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about decorating my new home is reimagining pieces I already own and using them in new exciting ways. I searched high and low for something to put over the bed and out of desperation I decided to try this artwork. It ended up being exactly what I needed! The moral of the story? Always shop your home.

Now let’s talk about this super affordable light fixture! It’s probably my favorite thing in the space. It’s the perfect amount of drama that draws your eyes up and makes the ceiling feel higher. The scale of it also expands the feel of the room and makes it feel bigger. Now, it was a complete pain in my ENTIRE BODY to install by myself because all assembled it is heavy! But I eventually figured out that I needed to install in it reverse of the directions to alleviate the weight. But once it was up and I saw how much it completely changed the feel of the room, I decided it was totally worth it. Last but not least…nothing says “Welcome!” like fresh flowers.
