Ballin’ on a Budget: Keri Hilson
Been a minute since I did one of these…
Decided to go with Keri Hilson this time. Miss Keri Baby, as she calls herself, has a style that I would call “Hood Haute” (if such a thing exists). She’s notorious for ruining a perfectly cute outfit with a pair of metallic ‘kicks’. She’s like the girl at your high school who couldn’t quite work it out in heels and therefore threw on a pair of J’s with everything. Hey…but at least she’s trying, right? I guess.
I came across this picture of Ms. Baby and was pleasantly surprised. This might be one of the few times I’ve seen her in something other than a pair of tights that she had mistaken for pants. (Ladies…please stop that mess!). She wasn’t able to kick her addiction to neon metallics and the fit in the crotch region is horrendous, but the concept is très cute! Her hair is sleek and simple — I prefer this to the 2k10 rat tail she’s currently rocking. It wasn’t cute in the 90’s…it’s not cute now! And shorts and a tank top is a perfect way to show off her frame and flawless skin. I think what got my attention most was the choice of shoes. Not sure I would have chosen a bronze heel, but on her skin complexion it’s pure genius.

I chose a pair of similar pink silk chiffon shorts…sans the bling. A looser fitting fabric will prevent the “Is that an almost camel toe?” situation that Keri has going on. I decided to dress it down with a pair of gladiator sandals, a nice play off the primal feel of the zebra print top and belt. (You can always sex it back up with a pair of heels.) A chunky cuff and hoop earrings with a pop of color complete the ensemble. Now, go forth and try it!
All I ask it that you wait until the appropriate season to wear this. Please don’t be the fool walking around dressed for Spring Break when it’s not Spring Break!!! One day of warm weather shouldn’t trigger an allergy to clothes!

Well the first rule of fashion is that your clothes should not MATCH, but rather GO together! Excessive matching comes across as costumey and (in my opinion) lacks vision. Even a 5 year old can get up in the morning and put on every pink article of clothing they own. A piece of my soul dies every time I see a girl draped from head to toe in one color (they even get creative sometimes and toss in a 2nd color). Either way…I die! O…and don’t get me STARTED on the matching eye shadow. I can’t even articulate why it’s wrong, it’s just wrong! Think about any high fashion magazine you’ve read or photo shoot you’ve seen…they don’t do it! Clothing and accessories should have dimension. Mix patterns, mix colors, even fabrics, anything to avoid looking like a one dimensional cardboard cut out of a cartoon character. The only exception to that rule is the color black.
If those type of things are not something that you just naturally do, try watching shows or reading mags that give you ideas. I’m not saying bite someone else’s style (I hate that too), but I’m saying use it as a tool to cultivate your own style.
O and to answer your question, it’s what I equate with ghetto. To me, it’s the chick who picks one color out of an outfit and goes HAM on it. Matching nails, shoes, jeans, eyeshadow…toss in a little colored weave and she’s ready to stunt on these ho*s! I gag! LOL. But again…I think that results from a lack of exposure to other things/styles. When every one you know dresses that way you don’t see anything wrong with it.

Thats Genius, to have a “fashion show in your room,” the only problem is you only think about these things when you have an event, or the weekends because Monday through Friday its “Corporate America” wardrobe…However, one day I’ll try IT
Also, why is matching “ghetto,” too much matching can be distasteful but I love purple, and I love to wear it, from shoes to tops and accessories–whats the ideal match, or something fun and free

Simple…STOP IT! LOL Excessive matching will only have you looking…well…ghetto. (No way to sugarcoat that. lol) I’ve never understood people’s fear of clothes. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT…CHANGE! But you’ll never know if you can “pull it off” if you don’t try it. Sometimes when I’m bored on the weekends I hold fashion shows in my room. #dontjudeme lol I will literally put the most random pieces together. If I like it…great! If not, on to the next.

I like this look… I don’t know that I could pull it off though.. I’m kinda addicted to matching.. I know my clothes aren’t suppose to “match”.. but for some reason I can’t kick the habit..any advice?
